Understanding and Treating: Basic Points to Understand Dehydration in Cats

on

Dehydration in cats occurs when the body loses too much fluid - not just water, but important minerals such as chloride, sodium and potassium.

  • The importance of water for cats:
    • Water plays a vital role in keeping your cat healthy - aiding in circulation, digestion and waste elimination, and replacing fluids lost in urine and faeces. Dehydration can lead to serious medical problems if not addressed promptly.

    • Causes of dehydration in cats:
      • Common causes include excessive fluid loss due to inadequate fluid intake, diabetes, diarrhea, fever, heat stroke, trauma, vomiting, etc. Ensuring your cat has access to fresh water every day is essential to prevent dehydration.

      • Determining Water Needs:
        • Cats need about 3.5 to 4.5 ounces of water per 5 pounds of body weight daily. While moist food contributes to hydration and is up to 80 % water, cats on dry food need additional moisture from their watering hole.

        • Recognizing the symptoms of dehydration:
          • Symptoms include loss of energy, panting, refusal to eat, sunken eyes and dry mouth. A skin pull test is normal if the skin bounces back quickly after being lifted, but if it bounces back slowly or the skin remains tented, your cat may be dehydrated and should be seen by a veterinarian immediately.

          • What to do if your cat is dehydrated:
            • Contact your veterinarian immediately. In the meantime, try adding chicken broth or tuna juice to your cat's water, offering wet food, putting ice in her water bowl, etc. Respect your cat's water source preferences and provide a choice of water stations and sources.

            • Cats prone to dehydration:
              • Cats with existing illnesses or who are older are more susceptible. Conditions such as cancer, diabetes, hyperthyroidism and kidney problems can increase the risk. Consult your veterinarian for guidance on maintaining ideal hydration.

              • Treating dehydration:
                • A veterinarian may inject fluids subcutaneously or hospitalize a severely dehydrated cat for direct fluid administration. Identifying and addressing the underlying cause is key for effective treatment.

                  • Prevent dehydration:
                    • Encourage hydration by regularly cleaning water bowls, providing fresh water, providing multiple water sources, considering electrolyte supplements, and using cat drinking fountains.

                    summary:

If you suspect your cat is dehydrated, it's important to act quickly, as this could be a sign of an underlying medical problem. Prevention includes understanding your cat's water preferences and implementing strategies to ensure adequate hydration. Always consult your veterinarian for individual guidance on your cat's health.
